ABET LEVEL 1 (COMMUNICATION):

Purpose of the course:
The education and training of adults in areas of primary knowledge in Communication, integrated with lifelong skills.

Course Modules:

  • Engage in a range of speaking and listening interactions
  • Read and respond to a range of text types
  • Write for a variety of different purpose and context

Specific Outcomes:

Engage in a range of speaking and listening interactions

  • initiate and maintain conversation
  • ask for and give simple information, explanations, directions and instructions
  • make and respond to offers and requests
  • express and respond to opinions and feelings
  • listen and respond critically to oral text

Read and respond to a range of text types

  • understanding the literal meaning of a text
  • relate text to own experience and knowledge
  • interpret and respond critically to a text
  • use appropriate reading strategies to suit the text and the purpose of the task

Write for a variety of different purpose and contexts

  • select and present content appropriate to the writing task
  • organize and format text appropriately to the writing task
  • use language conventions appropriate to the nature of the text type
  • plan, draft and edit own writing

ABET LEVEL 1 (NUMERACY):

Purpose of the Course:
The education and training of adults in areas of primary knowledge in Numeracy, integrated with lifelong skills.

Course Modules:

  • demonstrate understanding of and use the number system
  • solve simple realistic and abstract problems involving the combination, separation, comparison,
  • equalization, sharing and grouping of numbers
  • extract and use information derived from simple tables and organize information into tables

Specific Outcomes:

Demonstrate understanding of and use the number system

  • count and/ or estimate a number of items and an amount of money and record the number or amount orally and in writing
  • demonstrate understanding of and use the continuous, recurring, patterned nature of the whole number system to generate, order and compare numbers, and identify and complete simple number and visual patterns
  • work with fractions and demonstrate understanding of the size, concept and use of fractions and the link between fractions, decimals and percentages
  • demonstrate understanding of and use mathematical language, symbol and notation to represent and communicate mathematical relations, concepts and generalizations
  • explain the origin and logic of, and use an alternative means of counting and recording quantity

Solve simple realistic and abstract problems involving the combination, separation, comparison, equalization, sharing and grouping of numbers

  • solve realistic and abstract problems by estimation and calculation involving the combination, separation, comparison and equalization of two numbers and demonstrate understanding of the processes used
  • solve realistic and abstract problems involving the sharing and grouping of quantities
  • use a variety of standard measures of time en everyday contexts
  • use a variety of standard and non-standard measures of distance, length, capacity and mass to estimate, compare and measure in everyday problem contexts

Extract and use information derived from simple tables and organize information into tables

  • extract and record information from simple mathematical tables
  • use information derived from tables to answer simple questions related to the tables
  • demonstrate understanding of the use of tables and organize information into simple tables
