About the programme:

The Adventure-based Experiential Learning ‘Train the Trainers’ Programme aims to provide trainers and facilitators with the necessary skills and knowledge to use outdoor activities (adventure training) as experiential learning medium to transfer learning. The programme runs over a period of 5-days and has three modules and two written assignments. The modules are shortly set out below:

Module 1: Orientation & Theory to AEL
This Module is accompanied by a written assignment and will cover the following areas:

  • Introduction to AEL
  • Defining the term AEL
  • Principles of AEL
  • Characteristics of AEL
  • Competency model for AEL
  • Philosophy of AEL
  • History of AEL
  • AEL ethics
  • The AEL paradigm
  • Theoretical base for AEL
  • Defining key Concepts

Module 2: Practical Application of AEL

  • Practical skills
  • Facilitation skills
  • Meta skills
  • Initiating activities
  • Group activities
  • High ropes challenge
  • Indoor activities
  • Wilderness activities
  • Needs-based continuous development
  • The experiential learning cycle
  • The adventure wave
  • Challenging by choice

Module 3: AEL Programme Management

  • Administrative activities
  • Planning an AEL programme
  • Designing an AEL programme

The workshop outcome:

On completion of this workshop the participant should be able to use Adventure-based Experiential Learning as technique to transfer knowledge & skills and to develop groups.

Specific outcomes of the workshop content:

Participants will the achieve the workshop outcome by being able to:

  • Understand the necessary theoretical background on Adventure-based Experiential Learning.
  • Demonstrate the necessary skills to present training & group development by using Adventure-based Experiential Learning as medium. These skills will include practical skills, facilitation skills and meta skills.
  • Plan and design an AEL intervention.
  • Manage the risk involved with AEL.

Training methodology:

The methodology is based on interactive learning, i.e. learners will learn by doing. Furthermore learners will use examples from their own environments, thus ensuring that the learning is anchored at their workplace. Most of the interactive learning will take the form of simulated exercises where participants can demonstrate the skills taught.
As with all DCT training programmes, we strive to effect actual change back at the workplace through effective and practical outcomes based training.
