Education Training & Development Practitioners Portfolio1. Introduction 2. Occupation-directed ETD Practitioners Programmes 3. Adventure-based Experiential Learning (AEL) ‘Train the Trainers’ Programme 4. Group Consultation Skills 5. Diversity ‘Train the Trainers’ Programme 6. Neuro Linguistic Programming for Trainers __________________________________________________________ The role of the trainer in the organisation has changed drastically. This is because of new legislation within the field of training and development. Legislation such as the SAQA Act, Skills Development Act and Skills Development Levies Act ensures that the road is laid out for training to play a bigger role in organisations. With this the role of ETDP’s (Education, Training and Development Practitioners) and other role-players in training will be enhanced. With this bigger role new skills will be expected of ETDP’s and this programme is designed to address this need. Different aspects of ETD Practitioners functioning; such as classroom based workshop type training to experiential adventure aspects are catered for in this comprehensive developmental portfolio. This will allow for the ETD Practitioner to function effectively within the dynamic field of training and development in our country today. The
different focus areas with their programmes are:
All programmes here are based on the unit standards of qualifications in Occupational-directed ETD that is part of the NQF. The focus of development is on the 10 unit standards on NQF level 5 (Certificate in Occupation-directed ETD Practice). This qualification can be attended as a whole where it is presented in five separate skills development workshops or as individual workshops, based on individual unit standards. The Certificate programme will allow for ETD Practitioners to compile a portfolio of evidence to be registered as ETD Practitioners, as well as Assessors at the applicable Sectoral Education & Training Authority (SETA). This registration is necessary for practitioners to take up their role within the boundaries of new legislation. Aspects covered are for example the designing of outcomes-based learning programmes, writing of unit standards, facilitation skills in outcomes-based training, designing assessments for learning programmes as well as other aspects covered in the registered unit standards. Training will be done through self-study, followed-up by a short focussed workshop intervention with time set out for practical application to do formative assessment. Lastly the learner will have to do a workplace-based project for summative assessment before certification and registration at the relevant SETA. Because of the fact that training is presented according to registered unit standards learners will receive certificates endorsed by the relevant SETA and will be able to use credits towards the accumulation of full qualifications registered on the NQF that will be recognised nationally. Following is a list of occupation-directed ETD programmes that DCT presents. Occupation-directed ETD Programmes available:
3. Adventure-based Experiential Learning (AEL) ‘Train the Trainers’ Programme
This developmental programme allows for ETD Practitioners to develop skills within the diverse field of experiential-based training and development. The methodology here is to expose a group to an experience that can be either classroom based or adventure based. This includes indoor experiential activities as well as adventure activities such as high and low ropes courses. The programme will equip the ETD Practitioner with skills necessary to identify developmental needs within the group as well as addressing it using various methods and activities. With these skills the ETD Practitioner will be able to use another, very effective approach to ensure the optimal development of skills of learners.
In
this developmental programme ETD Practitioners are prepared on various
levels to develop skills to work effectively with groups. Group consultation
skills should equip the group consultant or facilitator to deal with strategic
planning sessions, problem-solving and brain storming sessions, decision-making
and planning sessions, or any other group process whereby decision-making,
planning or problem-solving is involved. Aspects
covered are group dynamics and facilitation skills for group consultants.
The process covered is to use various methodologies to obtain information
from a group and using various processing skills and designing interventions
based on the dynamics within groups. This
will make the group facilitator aware of group processes on a deeper level
than just the obvious aspects that can clearly be seen in the workshop
environment. Thus equipped the facilitator can utilise a broader scope
of involvement to ensure that the group consultation process has covered
every aspect required.
5.
Diversity ‘Train the Trainers’ Programme This
a complete programme to provide ETD Practitioners (trainers) with the
necessary skills in training other people in diversity awareness and
facilitating organisational change in the field of diversity. The programme
consists of practical workshops and assignments. Theory on the conscious
as well as the sub-conscious aspects of diversity is covered. Learners
will also receive the skills in designing and presenting their own diversity
workshops and to assist with organisational change and transformation
in their workplace. In
this programme a multi-method approach to training is used. Although
the diversity-training program can be described as a ‘soft skill’
or ‘sensitivity training program’ because of it’s
emphasis on self-awareness, the self-awareness is done through a systematic
process and group interaction. The degree to which the process is allowed
to evolve is limited and the term ‘experiential learning’
is usually preferred to describe what happens in the group. Within the
experiential group, insight is gained into various intra-psychic and
interpersonal issues. Through role-plays the process attempts to redesign
behaviour.
The
developmental programme is aimed at giving participants a solid introduction
to NLP and to apply basic NLP techniques within his/her daily environment.
This is just another tool that the ETD Practitioner can use to ensure
the optimum development of learners and effective learning programmes. |
