About the programme:

The purpose of this programme is to introduce new shop stewards to their role and function at the workplace. The programme aims to give the participant enough basic knowledge on shop steward practice for effective workplace functioning and prepares the participant for more advanced shop steward training. The programme covers all the basic areas of shop steward functioning as set out in the specific workshop outcomes below.

Workshop outcome:

On completion of this workshop the participant must have enough background knowledge to function effectively as a shop steward at the workplace.

Specific workshop outcomes:

Participants will achieve the workshop outcome by being able to:

  • Know the history and background of Labour Legislation in South Africa
  • Understand the functions and structures of Trade Unionism in South Africa
  • Understand the role and duties of a shop steward at the workplace
  • Facilitate effective interaction with management
  • Understand the mechanisms of a grievance procedure
  • Understand the mechanisms of a disciplinary code and procedure
  • Know different approaches to handling conflict at the workplace

Training methodology:

The methodology is based on interactive learning, i.e. learners will learn by doing. Furthermore learners will use examples from their own environments, thus ensuring that the learning is anchored at their workplace. Most of the interactive learning will take the form of simulated exercises and case studies where participants will demonstrate the skills taught.
As with all DCT training programmes, we strive to effect actual change back at the workplace through effective and practical outcomes based training.
