Pre-requisite
for Attendance:
It
is a pre-requisite for this programme that participants have attended
an introductory course on shop steward practice.
About
the programme:
The
purpose of this programme is to equip participants with broader knowledge
and skills on Shop Steward Practice. Starting off with a review on basic
shop steward practice concepts and then moving to more detailed aspects,
as set out in the following modules:

Workshop outcome:
On
completion of this workshop the participant must understand the broader
context Shop Steward Practice as well as more specific aspects of the
Shop Steward function.
Specific
workshop outcomes:
Participants
will achieve the workshop outcome by being able to:
- Understand
the Shop Stewards role and function
- Have thorough
knowledge on Labour Law and its applications
- Understand
the South African dispute resolution mechanisms and the role and function
of a shop steward in the dispute resolution process
- Understand
and constructively participate in workplace grievance and disciplinary
processes
- Understand
the grounds, rules and processes of termination of employment
- Apply
negotiation skills effectively within the workplace
Training methodology:
The
methodology is based on interactive learning, i.e. learners will learn
by doing. Furthermore learners will use examples from their own environments,
thus ensuring that the learning is anchored at their workplace. Most of
the interactive learning will take the form of simulated exercises and
case studies where participants will demonstrate the skills taught.
As with all DCT training programmes, we strive to effect actual change
back at the workplace through effective and practical outcomes based training.
